Former Attorney General Azima Shakoor has filed her nomination to contest Progressive Party of Maldives/ People's National Congress (PPM/PNC) primary election, which will determine the party's candidate to contest the election for Malé City Mayor.

During the ceremony at the new office of PPM/PNC, Azima's nomination was handed over to PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

After submitting her form, Azima stated that she is running for Mayor to continue her services to the people, emphasizing that this is the time to elect a Mayor who will collaborate effectively with the government.

“I believe it is important to bring in an active, diligent and knowledgeable person who can work with the government at this time, to resolve the issues in Malé City” Azima said.

Azima said that if elected as Mayor, she would uphold the vision of former Mayor and incumbent President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for Malé.

The PPM/PNC coalition primary election is scheduled for December 9. Currently, Azima is the sole candidate who has submitted a nomination for the Mayoral post.

The seat of Malé City Mayor fell vacant after the new President of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, resigned to assume presidency on November 17. Additionally, three members of the council also resigned from their posts.

In addition to the Mayor's position, vacancies in constituencies, including Maafannu South, Medhu Henveiru, and Henveiru Dhekunu, have been announced.

The Elections Commission has decided to conduct by-elections to elect members for these seats on January 13, 2024.

Former MTCC CEO Adam Azim has been nominated by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to contest for the Mayoral seat. Current city councilor Mohammed Saaif Fathih and former Police Commissioner Hussain Waheed have also expressed interest in the post.
