Judicial watchdog on Wednesday appointed chief judges to the criminal court and civil court on Wednesday.
Controversial Judge Abdul Baaree Yoosuf will head the criminal court while Abdulla Ali has been named the chief judge of the civil court.
Both Baaree and Abdulla have been the acting judges of the criminal and civil court respectively.
Judicial Service Commission (JSC) said the appointments followed extensive interviews and unanimous votes by the commission members..
Baaree has presided over several recent high-profile trials and had sentenced three opposition leaders to jail; former President Mohamed Nasheed, former Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim and Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdulla.
