Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusan stated today that the decision not to impose parking violation stickers due to the state not yet having provided allocated parking spaces, is not a license to park vehicles anywhere one pleases.

The president Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had determined to cease issuing parking stickers until parking buildings are established and allocated parking spaces are provided. He had also cancelled parking fines issued during the previous government’s administration.

With this decision, the parking situation in the City of Male has spiraled. While Boduthakurufaanu Magu does not permit any vehicle parking, vehicles are seen parked on both sides of the road, impeding ease of travel through the road for drivers.

However, the police have not taken any action against this unlawful parking to date.

“Not imposing stickers at this time should not be regarded as a license to park anywhere one desires. At this time, all citizens must acknowledge that the city roads are for everyone’s use,” Minister Ihusan said during the media briefing held yesterday, responding to a question by Mihaaru regarding the escalated traffic situation in Male’ City.

“Subsequently, a fire vehicle may get stuck on the road due to the manners in which you have parked your vehicles and putting out a fire in your house or a place of interest may be delayed. The ambulance arrival may be delayed.”

The Minister strongly recommends to park vehicle in a manner that does not cause difficulties to other vehicles until the necessary parking spaces are established.

Police Commissioner, Ali Shujau assured that deliberations on resolving the parking of vehicles on both sides of road are ensuing. He said that the people will begin being informed on a course of action within a short time.

Shujau shared that a window will be provided for the people to correct their unlawful parking and remove the vehicles if required. He said that failure to abide as instructed within the given deadline will result in the vehicles being towed.
