The Local Government Authority (LGA) has announced the recipients of the prestigious "Kangathi Award 2021," which is awarded to local councils with exceptional performance.

The award, conferred by LGA, celebrates the improvement, participation, and progress of the local councils. The authority held a press conference on Monday to announce the results.

According to the LGA’s performance index, the recipients of the "Gadhahamaantha Dharaja," which is awarded to the atoll councils that scored the top marks in the index, are:

1. Shaviyani Atoll Council

2. Faafu Atoll Council

3. Laamu Atoll Council

The recipients of the "Ranahamaantha Dharaja" award, conferred on the top-scoring island councils, are:

1. Alifu Alifu Atoll Bodufulhadhoo Island Council

2. Baa Atoll Fehendhoo Island Council

3. Haa Alifu Atoll Thuraakunu Island Council

The island and atoll councils with the most significant improvement were awarded the "Kannaa Handhaanee Filaa," which was awarded to Shaviyani Atoll Council and Baa Atoll Kamandhoo Island Council.

The LGA also presented "Maaraadha Handhaanee Filaa" recognition plaques to island and atoll councils in five sub-categories, including: recognising the implementation of the Decentralisation Act; the effectiveness index; the participation index; the accountability index; and the security index.

The councils are awarded marks based on the information they provide; councils are required to submit fiscal reports and performance indicator reports to the LGA annually.

The LGA stated that it will set a date for the official award ceremony and announce it soon.
