Maldives Customs Service has introduced a new regulation to gather airline passenger details to Customs.

The regulation, which was published in the gazette on Sunday, stated that in addition to passenger details, information regarding the airlines which depart from and arrive in Maldives are also to be divulged to Customs.

Customs' Senior Superintendent Ahmed Niyaz declared that Customs were facing many challenges due to the lack of said information. He stated that the new regulation will ease operations as it stipulates flight operators to disseminate the required information.

Niyaz added that while drugs are smuggled into Maldives through certain countries, this data will be useful for them to prepare and conduct these operations.

Under the regulation, flight operators must publicize flight arrival and departure times to Customs along with the passenger details. A fine of MVR 2,000 will be levied on the airlines’ local agents that fail to disclose the data, with an additional MVR 300 fine per flight to be imposed until the airline passes the information.

The regulation will be implemented a month from the date of publication. It was passed in reference to a resolution ratified by the United Nations' Security Council.
