The Ministry of Education has sent a circular to schools directing them to not create Viber groups for separate classes for communication between parents and teachers.

Currently, each class has a Viber group through which teachers send information regarding lessons, things that need to be brought to school, and other activities.

On the other side, parents, too, use this group to express concerns and make queries.

Some teachers have concerns regarding these Viber groups, which are sometimes active around the clock.

The Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu stated that changes would be brought to this arrangement, and a specific guideline to be followed in such communications will be compiled.

The circular said that additional steps need to be taken by schools to ensure students become responsible and take ownership of learning.

It advised schools to shut down the Viber groups, and replace them with channels which allow one way communication from the teachers, effectively using these as a digital noticeboard of the school.

In the instance that an additional group needs to be created for official correspondence, these can be formed for separate key stages or grades, the circular said.

Additionally, the circular said that two hours after school session ends be set as a cut off time for school to send messages to parents on these channels as well.
