Ru'ya has broken the challenging 100 meter record after 2 years

Ru'ya had broken the 100 meter track record broken one and a half years ago by Himna after 21 long years with a time of 12.02 seconds; just 15 milliseconds faster than the previous kept record.

Two years after the long-kept Maldives' Women's 100 meter record was broken in 21 years, Ru'ya Ali has made record time in the long distance meet held in Germany yesterday.

Up until Ru'ya broke the record during the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) All Comers Track and Field Meet held in Germany, the 1000 meters Women's record was held by Aishath Himna who recorded the time in 2022.

Ru'ya had ended this record one year and 10 months after Himna recorded a time of 12.17 seconds during the Commonwealth Games held in England on August 2022 with a time of 12.02 seconds.

Prior to Himna's new record, the 100 meter record was maintained by the best female runner in all of Maldives, Shamha Ahmed for 21 long years. Shamha finished the race in the 100 meter World Championships held in Edmonton, Canada in 2001 with a record time of 12.27 seconds.

An expert had stated back in 2022 that Maldives keeping a record that could not be broken by another athlete for 21 years is a reason the country's athletics has not been progressing as much it should.

Shamha also stated that she herself was shocked that her record remained unbroken by another runner in such a remarkably long time during a previous interview given to Mihaaru News.

"I thought why it took such a long time to break the record. I thought it must be because there isn't good coaching in Maldives athletics," said Shamha during the interview with Mihaaru News on January last year.

Ru'ya now holds records in two categories of the event with the record broken in the 100 meter track today. She also maintains the Maldives' Women's Junior 100 meter record as well.

Two other runners who competed in the event held in Jamaica, Germany had also broken record in the National Junior category.

Mohamed Minhal had renewed his own record held in the Maldives' Men's Junior 100 meter track. He beat the record time of 10.82 seconds he made during the Asian Games held in China last year with a new time of 10.73 in the race yesterday.

Moreover, Ziva Moosa Shafeeu had also broken the Women's Junior 200 meter record of 25.66 seconds made by Ahuna Nizar in the same Asian Games last year with a time of 25.60 seconds.
