Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid met with a Thai delegation on Wednesday to discuss formalizing a visa waiver arrangement between Maldives and Thailand.
The meeting was held in the sidelines of the Second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation (BAPA+40) currently ongoing in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Means of improving the bilateral relations between the two countries was also discussed in the meeting.
A tweet by the Foreign Minister following the meeting highlighted the importance of a visa waiver arrangement, noting that Maldives hosts a large number of Thai investments, adding that Thailand served as a important hub for Maldivian entrepreneurs.
As of now, Maldivians are allowed entry into Thailand after a payment of MVR 1000 in visa fees, for a 30-day period. Costs are increased for longer stays and multiple entries.
Whilst in discussions with Thailand, the state has already begun implementing the visa waivers granted by neighboring India.
Due to the agreement signed between India and the Maldivian government, locals are now able travel to India for recreational, medical, and educational purposes exempt from the hassle of attaining specific visas.
Further, Minister Shahid has recently held discussions for more lenient visa regulations for Maldivians residing in Malaysia as well.
