The Japanese government signed a USD 41,133 grant contract with Maldives Autism Association on Thursday, under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme.

The contract was signed between Ambassador of Japan to Maldives Keiko Yanai and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Autism Association Dr Ismail Shafeeu.

According to the Japanese Embassy, Autism Association will implement the project with grant funds to procure a visual screener and a hearing screener, as well as conduct a training workshop.

The equipment enables identification of visual or hearing impairment, which will allow early intervention to alleviate the disabilities derived from such impairments. The visual screening can be conducted for children that are six months and older, while the hearing screening can be conducted for newborn babies.

The GGP scheme is part of the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) implemented by the Japanese Embassy to empower the people at the grassroots level. Since 1996, the GGP scheme has been extended to 16 projects in various sectors such as education, environment, health, transportation and energy.
