A large FSM vessel has been brought near the island to assist in refloating the fuel barge that ran aground on the Nilandhoo reef.
Efforts to refloat a fuel barge of state owned company FSM (Fuel Supplies Maldives) which ran aground on the reef of Gaafu Alifu atoll Nilandhoo has commenced.
Nilandhoo Council President Ibrahim Nasih speaking with Mihaaru News said that a large vessel has been brought near the island to assist in refloating the fuel barge that ran aground on the Nilandhoo reef. Efforts to refloat the barge are now underway, he said.
Nasih said that, so far, there are no signs of major damage or fuel leakage.
“There will be some damage when it hits the reef, but it doesn’t seem to have broken. There is no fuel leakage yet,” he said.
The council will continue to monitor the situation closely and assess the damage to the reef once the barge is successfully refloated, Nasih said.
FSM has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
