Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau [SLFEB] has busted a major human trafficking network operating between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

According to the Daily Mirror operating in Sri Lanka, more than 100 women have been sold off to VIP’s of Maldives till date. Referring to the SLFEB, Daily Mirror reports that two Sri Lankan men aged 37 and 55 years who allegedly masterminded the long run human trafficking racket were taken into custody in Battaramulla after an investigation done through decoy.

This issue was brought to light after a 35-year-old victim escaped from the racket and returned to Sri Lanka. Consequentially another woman who was prepared to be sent to the Maldives on Wednesday was also rescued, says the Daily Mirror. The suspects said during the interrogation that they pay each woman more than Rs. 180,000 [MVR 18,700] for engaging in prostitution.

“First they ask for a photograph of the woman. After selecting her, a brief explanation about the job is given. The majority of the women are aware while some of them are sent under the guise of giving them job opportunities as salon workers in Maldives,” an official SLFEB told the Daily Mirror.

The Daily Mirror further states that the Maldivian High Commission responded that they haven’t received any information regarding such a case.
