Maldives ranked at 25 for its performance in managing global pandemic by Australia’s Lowy Institute.

According to the institute, their interactive platform explores how countries managed the pandemic to date following their hundredth confirmed case of COVID-19.

”Countries have been sorted into broad categories — by regions, political systems, population size, and economic development — to determine whether significant variations exist between different types of states in the handling of the pandemic.”

Their rankings are based on publicly available for 98 counties and comparable data on the virus. s

Six measures of COVID-19 in those 98 countries were tracked over a period of 36 weeks that followed every country’s hundredth confirmed case, using data available to 9 January 2021.

The institute then calculates fourteen-day rolling averages of new daily figures for the following indicators:

- Confirmed cases

- Confirmed deaths

- Confirmed cases per million people

- Confirmed deaths per million people

- Confirmed cases as a proportion of tests

- Tests per thousand people

“An average across those indicators was then calculated for individual countries in each period and normalised to produce a score from 0 (worst performing) to 100 (best performing).”

This score indicates how well or poorly a country managed the pandemic during the afore mentioned period.

Maldives landed 25th position with a score of 61 points.

New Zealand landed at the top with 94.4, the next closest was Vietnam at second position with 90.8 points.

Meanwhile the lowest ranks with single digit points were occupied by Colombia 7.7, Mexico 6.5, and Brazil at the very bottom with 4.3 points.

Although the COVID-19 virus was first detected from China, it was excluded from the listing. Lowy Institute highlighted that this was due to a lack of publicly available data on testing from the country.

Lowy Institute, located in Sydney, Australia is an independent, nonpartisan international policy think tank. The think tank provides high-quality research and distinctive perspectives on the international trends shaping Australia and the world.

The Maldivian government, on Monday, commenced its COVID-19 vaccination Programme with the inoculation of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and Chief Justice Ahmed Muhthasim Adnan. This is at a time when the country is re-entering a surge in positive cases.

Sunday, January 31 marks the eighth consecutive day that Maldives records daily cases over 100, after a long period of maintaining lower numbers of virus cases.

Currently, the island nation records a total of 15,841 virus cases of which 1,644 are active cases, in addition to 14,139 recoveries and 52 deaths.
