According to his father, Maaniu underwent a five-hour surgery following the incident and has since been admitted to the ICU for a cheekbone surgery this morning.
A Maldivian student undergoing pilot training in the Philippines has been seriously injured in an accident and is undergoing multiple surgeries, his family said.
Abdul Maaniu, from Haa Dhaalu atoll Hanimaadhoo, sustained injuries to his face, stomach, and shoulder, and lost part of a finger after reportedly being struck by a propeller.
The incident occurred yesterday while he was on-site at his flying school.
Speaking to Mihaaru News, Maaniu’s father said the family is still unsure about the exact cause of the accident.
“We haven’t been able to speak to him yet. The other students were in shock, and we received different accounts of what happened,” he said.
Maaniu, who began his studies in the Philippines a year ago, had only recently started flying.
According to his father, Maaniu underwent a five-hour surgery following the incident and has since been admitted to the ICU for a cheekbone surgery this morning.
“He’s in stable condition, but there are more surgeries ahead,” the father added.
While it has been said that Maaniu may have exited the aircraft feeling dizzy, his father said he had passed all medical evaluations with good results prior to the incident.
Members of his family have since left for the Philippines to be with him.
