The man who was accused of killing his wife in Haa Dhaalu atoll Nolhivaram, attempted to commit suicide, the Maldives Police Service confirmed late Monday night.

Aboobakuru Faisal, 32, of Haa Dhaalu atoll Fenfushi, was found attempting to hang himself while in police custody. The police said that the incident occurred at around 11:15 p.m.

He is now being treated at the ICU in Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, in the same atoll.

Faisal fled to Kulhudhuffushi city shortly before his wife, Nishama Mohamed, 28, was discovered dead. According to the police, he had gone to the police station in the city on his own accord and tried to file a report alleging that he was a victim of domestic abuse.

However, he was later arrested as there were suspicious circumstances surrounding his wife’s death, and on Sunday, the court ordered his remand for 15-days. Faisal attempted to hang himself while he was on remand.

A source from Nolhivaram told Mihaaru news that there were strangulation marks on Nishama’s neck. Neighbours also heard arguments from their house earlier in the day.

Her body was discovered on Friday by a relative who had called her and Faisal several times but had received no response. According to the source, they had to break into the house because it was locked.

The couple have three children together. They were all inside the house when the island’s residents entered.

The police have since brought Nishama’s body to Malé for an autopsy.

Reportedly, Faisal has a history of drug abuse and domestic violence. He was allegedly abusive to his ex-wife and attacked her several times when he was under the influence. She even filed reports against him with the police; however, no serious actions were ever taken at the time. The case was not investigated further after she moved to her native island in Lhaviyani atoll after their divorce. They have a child together as well.

The police have not made any official comments regarding the incident yet.
