Police has revealed the information of an individual arrested for the attempted assassination of Majilis Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

An IED attached to a motorcycle outside Nasheed's residence explodes on May 6, as he was leaving his home to attend an event at another island. In the virtual press conference held by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih yesterday, he said so far eight people had been arrested in connection to that terror attack.

However, police had previously said only five people had been arrested before and only disclosed the identity of four of them.

Police said Ali Hashim, aged 27, from Noonu Manadhoo was arrested on June 11. His remand duration was increased by another 15 days on June 27.

The other people who's identity police have revealed are Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed from Vaavu Thinadhoo, Mujaaz Ahmed from Male', Thahumeen Ahmed from Gaafu Alifu Kondey, and Ahmed Fathih from Laamu Gan.

Adhuman, Mujaaz, and Thahmeen's remand duration has been extended by another 30 days on June 22 while Fathih's remand was extended by five days on June 20.

Police had conducted multiple joint operations with Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) against extremism after the terror attack. Some of the people police arrested in these arrests have direct connections to the assassination attempt.

Haisham was arrested during one such operation.
