President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the number of independent institutions will be decreased, with those remaining being streamlined to function with fewer members.

Speaking in last night's People's National Congress (PNC) gathering at PNC House, President Muizzu said that while many independent institutions had been set up as per the Constitution and laws of Maldives, it has been observed that an unnecessarily high number of members have been appointed to these.

The President noted that some commissions have five to seven members, and opined that there is no need for that many members to be part of any commission.

"It is unnecessary to have such a high number of commission members, such a large team is not needed to serve the people with integrity and sincerity. So we will reduce these numbers by defining in the law how many members each commission must have," President Muizzu said.

He further noted that there are multiple commissions in the country which are effectively tasked with overlapping responsibilities. He said that some of these commissions will be merged, while others will be dissolved.

The President highlighted that it is presently crucial to bring down State expenditure.
