While nearly all streets of Male' were flooded in yesterday's consistent rains, Maldives National Defence Force has said that about 10,000 tonnes of water had been pumped off the streets last night.

The rains began at 11am and continued throughout the day, late into the night. Floodwater seeped into residences and shops across the island, causing damage of varying levels. Maafannu, in particular, saw the highest rate of flooding.

In a message to the media group, MNDF said that pumps had been placed in six areas. This includes five pumps in the West Park area, five pumps near IGMH, three pumps near Salman Mosque, and one pump near the 'Bodu Valhu' area, Maafannu Ferry Terminal and Voice of Maldives area.

An MNDF Official said that as of 8:30pm last night, 9,917 tonnes of water had been pumped out of Male' streets.

MET Office said that Male' had seen 160mm of rainfall in the preceding 24 hours. The highest rainfall was recorded between 5pm and 6pm, at 60mm.
