MP of Maamigili Constituency, Qasim Ibrahim has alleged that former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government is responsible for subjecting the country's citizens to this poor economic condition where they are compelled to suffice with 'Garudhiya' (fish soup) and rice.

Qasim, also the Chairman of Jumhooree Party said this in response to a statement by MP Abdul Gafoor Moosa of Hanimadhoo Constituency.

Gafoor said that the country's economy was in good condition when the current opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s administration concluded. He maintained that the former government is not responsible for these economic changes and asserted that this truth needs to be accepted.

In response, Qasim raised a procedural issue and declared that Gafoor had blatantly told a lie, continuing on to claim that the derailed economic situation was caused by the doubled expenditure of loans withdrawn from companies during the two former MDP administrations as well as the previous administration of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

"The former administration is mainly responsible for subjecting the Maldivian citizens into poverty and forcing them into the position where they need to eat 'Garudhiya' and rice," said Qasim.

'Garudhiya and rice' is a reference to a statement made by Ali Arif, Minister at the President's Office, which sparked heavy public outcry and criticism on social media.

Speaking on employing measuring to reduce unnecessary expenses, Arif declared that the habit of ordering takeaways must end and citizens must lower themselves to an average lifestyle during these (difficult) times and suffice on 'Garudhiya' and rice.

Referencing this, Qasim said Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Governor Ali Hashim has also made it clear that the country was submitted to such a standard due to the actions of the former administration.

Qasim also stressed that it is important for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to take any and all necessary actions to resolve this.
