Maldives Immigration conducted a raid operation led by an all-female team for the first time in the agency's history.

In a statement, Immigration announced that a special operation was conducted in Hulhumale' on May 25 as part of a crackdown on illegal female expatriates.

Immigration said that the raid was led by a team of all female officers.

"This is the first raid operation in the long history of Immigration conducted solely by female officers, under the directive of Controller General of Immigration, Mohamed Shamaan Waheed," stated Immigration.

After inspecting eight locations in the capital city Male' and six locations in Hulhumale', Immigration detained and took into custody 15 female expatriates.

Immigration said that many of the expatriates whose statements were taken did not possess valid visas and were working at places not specified in their work permits.

The committee established by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology to address the issue of illegal migrants has carried out 33 operations to date, according to Immigration. Over 1,700 foreigners have been deported as part of these operations.
