The Athletics Association of Maldives has selected a team of Maldivian athletes to participate in Sri Lanka's 101st National Athletics Championship, scheduled to take place from 28th to 30th July 2023 at Sugathadasa Stadium in Sri Lanka.
In the tournament which attracts over 750 athletes, the Maldivian team will be represented by a total of four male and four female athletes, making up a team of eight participants.
The Maldivian team of male athletes for the championship comprises Hussain Zeek Suad, Adam Riffath, Zuiz Mohamed Suad, and Abdul-Rasheed Ismail. The female athletes representing the Maldives are Aminath Layana Mohamed, Hawwa Muzna Faiz, Aishath Naadhu Asadh, and Ziva Moosa Shafeeu.
Riffath, Abdul-Rasheed, Zeek, Layana, Muzna and Ziva are members of the national athletics squad and are traveling to Madagascar to compete in the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) in August.
Maldivian athletes have been actively participating in various tournaments held in neighboring countries as part of their preparation for the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG).
In April, the athletics association initially assembled a squad of 15 male and 12 female runners, totaling 27 athletes, to undergo training for the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG). However, as of last week, they have made adjustments to the squad, refining it to include a new total of 20 athletes, maintaining an equal ratio of male and female participants.
The Maldivian para-athletes for the IOIG have also been announced. Abdul-Razzaaq and Fathmath Ibrahim will be competing alongside their guides, Fathimath Shamha and Athif Ibrahim.
The selected 10 male runners for the IOIG are; Hussain Zeek Suad, Adam Riffath, Abdul-Rasheed Ismail, Hassan Saaid, Hussain Riza, Yoosuf Ibrahim, Hussain Faazil Haaroon, Mohamed Minhaal Shamin, Ibrahim Naahil Nizar and Ahmed Najudhaan Abdhulla.
The 10 female athletes from the final selection are; Aminath Layana Mohamed, Hawwa Muzna Faiz, Ziva Moosa Shafeeu, Aishath Himna Hassan, Maryam Ru'ya Ali, Maryam Alya Hussain, Ahna Nizar, Shamha Ahmed and Aishath Shaba Saleem.
