Aishath Himna Hassan breaks the national record of women's 100 meters race set by Shamha Ahmed 21 years ago.

Himna competed in the 100-meter event at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday, August 2, and finished the race in 12.17 seconds. Shamha completed the 100-meter event in 12.27 seconds at the 2001 World Championships held at Edmonton, Canada.

Himna, who won the best female athlete award at the Maldives Sports Awards held in March this year, also holds the national record for the 400 meter run.

She has set a record for the event five times so far, with the last record timed at 57.56 seconds at the national team tryouts in June.

Himna broke her own record finishing at 58.90 seconds at the Under-20 World Athletics Championship held in Kenya last year. She previously set the record at the 2019 Athletics Youth Championship held in Hong Kong and finished the race in 59.18 seconds.

She first set the record by finishing at 59.73 seconds at the 2018 Gurali Youth Olympics Qualifiers at the Asian Junior Athletics Championships. The record was previously held by Mirfat Ahmed who finished the race in 59.76 seconds at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India.
