Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib has stated that it is important to renovate the official Izzuddeen Jetty as it had fallen into disrepair due to lack of maintenance over the years.

The Minister stated this in response to criticism on social media platform X about the renovation works proceeding despite President Dr Mohamed Muizzu having announced that measures are being taken to reduce government expenditures due to the difficult economic situation the country is in.

Critics have been criticizing the renovation and redesign of the jetty which they say is in 'perfectly good condition'.

The Minister, however, said that the jetty is in a state of disrepair and poses a danger due to low maintenance over the years.

Hence, he said, an agreement had been entered into with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to renovate the jetty on August 14 last year, which was during the later days of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.

"As the Presidential Jetty is operated through fees from a large number of resorts, providing a revenue to the State, it is important to build the jetty to a high standard," the Minister posted on X.

The reconstruction of the jetty has been contracted to MTCC for MVR 11.7 million. The company is undertaking the project under a design and build policy.

Some changes that will be brought include replacing the current roof structure, designed to look like white canvas sails, to a wooden structure. This wooden roof is designed to imitate the roof of the same structure during the earlier administration of President Mohamed Ameen.
