The case of Sri Lankan native Lahiru Madushanka, who was arrested in 2015 under allegations of attempting to assassinate former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, was dismissed by the Criminal Court on Wednesday.

Along with Madhushanka, the cases of others implicated in the alleged assassination case, including Fazeel Hameed and Ishaq Hussain, were all thrown out from the court.

In an interview to local media Mihaaru, Madushanka's lawyer Fareesha Abdulla stated that the court dismissed the case due to insufficient evidence.

"Court has released Lahiru. But he still remains detained in Male' Prison," said the lawyer.

The Criminal Court's dismissal of Madushanka case came after Sri Lanka's Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, Faiszer Musthapha visited him at the detention centre in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll.

The state has also charged former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb of bringing in Madushanka to assassinate the former president. The court has yet to announce a verdict on Adeeb's case.

According to the state, those who planned to assassinate Yameen include Adeeb and Fazeel, while Madushankar's role was agreeing to carry out the assassination. In addition, Ishaq's role in the plot was to hand over the money upon the orders of Adeeb.
