The Criminal Court of the Maldives has announced a hearing on the ongoing Fuggiri Case pressed against former President Abdulla Yameen has been scheduled for Sunday, July 2.

Yameen, who is currently serving time in prison for accepting bribes and money laundering in the lease of Vaavu atoll Aarah, is facing additional charges of accepting a bribe of USD 1.1 million while leasing Fuggiri and using the bribe for money laundering.

In addition to today's hearing, the trial has been scheduled for next Thursday, as well as on July 9, 11, and 13.

Besides the former president, the state is pressing charges against other individuals involved in the case. The trial is currently in the stage of collecting witness testimonies and presenting evidence.

While Yameen faces potential conviction in the Fuggiri case, his defense has already filed an appeal in the High Court regarding the Aarah case. Hearings in the appeals court have already commenced.

Due to his conviction, the former president is currently ineligible to participate in the upcoming presidential elections. However, if his conviction is overturned by the appeals court, Yameen will have the opportunity to contest in the elections.
