The future of Maldivian tourism is the country's history and culture, declared Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed on Monday.

He made the statement at the fifth iteration of World Tourism Conference, which kicked off in Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

Sharing the country's journey of tourism at the conference, the minister stated that for an archipelago such as Maldives, the industry of tourism could be developed in a sustainable manner.

Minister Waheed went on to say that maintaining the natural environment of Maldives was imperative to advancing tourism, in addition to history and culture.

The minister had previously called for sustainable development of resorts to protect the environment.

World Tourism Conference was inaugurated by Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad. The two-day conference is attended by top environment officials from around the world.
