President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has been elected as the leader of the People's National Congress (PNC).
Dr. Muizzu and his running mate Hussain Mohamed Latheef contested the presidential election under the PNC ticket. Before that, both were members of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
During the PNC council meeting held last night, it was unanimously decided to elect Dr. Muizzu as the party's leader and vice president-elect Hussain as deputy leader. Abdul Raheem Abdulla, the former party leader, will now serve as the party's chairperson.
This decision was reached unanimously by the 40 members who attended the PNC council meeting.
Dr. Muizzu contested the election on a PNC ticket after former president Abdulla Yameen's bid to contest the election ended due to his prison sentence.
Initially, Yameen suggested boycotting the elections, but later made the decision to endorse Dr. Muizzu.
