The ministry said that Ali Imam Mohamed Ibn Saud Islamic University from Saudi Arabia had expressed interest in setting up an institute in Maldives to teach Arabic.
Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development is in deliberations to establish a campus of a foreign university in the Maldives for the first time.
The ministry said that Ali Imam Mohamed Ibn Saud Islamic University from Saudi Arabia had expressed interest in setting up an institute in Maldives to teach Arabic.
Last Thursday, State Ministers Dr Abdulla Nazeer and Ahmed Shafeeu had held deliberations with senior officials from the university.
Nazeer said that the university aims to establish a campus in Maldives, and through that, broaden arabic studies in the country. This is the first time that a foreign university is setting up a campus in the Maldives.
"The government's goal is, within the Arabic, Islam Education Program, to train teachers to teach Arabic language, and to conduct special classes for adults who want to teach Arabic language. Through this, we will be able to train the people necessary to establish Arabic language studies in the local schools," Nazeer explained.
He added that as the campus is going to be that of a foreign university, there is a chance that international students will also come to study there.
"This opens up a big investment, the establishment of an international university campus here in the Maldives," Nazeer said.
He said that the government is working to make five percent of those pursuing higher studies in Maldives to be international students, adding that international students coming to study in the country would have a positive impact on the economy as well.
At the meeting, the university was provided information regarding the registration of the institute, and on getting MQA accreditation. They also highlighted that establishing this campus would contribute towards further strengthening bilateral ties between the countries.
