President and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has reiterated his commitment to developing an airport in Raa atoll Dhuvaafaru as per the wishes of its residents.
Addressing a campaign rally in Dhuvaafaru, President Solih assured the public that the airport project would be realized during his second term in office.
President Solih highlighted the government's efforts to enhance the country's economy by improving connectivity between islands through both air and sea travel. He further announced a policy to enable 20-30 speedboat transfers to airport locations across the nation as part of these efforts.
The MDP candidate said that he has engaged in discussions with his policy team regarding the airport development project in Dhuvaafaru. He added that the airport's plan will be further discussed with the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (MNPHI), as well as the policy team.
While President Solih pledged to develop an airport in Dhuvaafaru, Ifuru, located within the same atoll, already has an airport which is a 15-minute speedboat ride away from islands in Raa atoll. Moreover, the development of two more airports in Beriyanfaru and Alifushi are already in various stages of development. While a developer has been contracted for the Alifushi project, the government is actively seeking an investor for the Beriyanfaru airport initiative.
