Statistics show that the state has not received MVR 1.6 billion as resort rent in the past two years.

According to information obtained by a citizen under the Right to Information Act (RTI Act), the unpaid amount includes rent deferred by the government in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic as well.

Statistics provided by Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) show that the state has not received MVR 480.1 million from the rent due in 2020. This includes MVR 220.9 million that was due in the first quarter of this year and MVR 259.3 million due in the second quarter.

Last year, unpaid resort rent amounted to MVR 996.15 million. This includes MVR 231.8 million that was due in the first quarter, MVR 234.45 million due in the second quarter, MVR 265 million for the third quarter, and MVR 264.9 million for the fourth quarter.

Additionally, the state have not yet received MVR 137.3 million owed in the third quarter of 2020. Although rent was deferred by the government due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, payments resumed on March 1, 2021.

Even though MIRA has disclosed the amount they have not received in resort rent, they have not disclosed which resorts are failing to make the payments on time.

Last year, MIRA received MVR 1.76 billion in resort rent, compared to MVR 702.97 million they received in 2020 in resort rent.
