Vaguthu News journalists received death threats, and the incident has been reported to the police, the CEO of the publication, Adam Nawaz, has confirmed.

Nawaz told Miharu News on Sunday that since their team wrote an article about religious extremism in Addu City back in December 2020, Vaguthu journalists have occasionally received threats.

Nawaz said that the police were notified in each of these incidents.

Vaguthu has a special team called "Heria" that travels around the Maldives to bring rural news. The team is currently in Lhaviyani Atoll.

Five days ago, a man named Mohamed Vishal posted on Facebook a screenshot of a news report from the atoll, alleging that the group was previously in Addu City to spy on Muslims.

Vishal had written that the government was detaining a lot of Muslims, claiming they were terrorists, and alleged that these government officials are "agents of Satan."

A man by the name of Ahmed Habib commented on this post saying that apostates deserve the death penalty. "Insha Allah. No matter how much the disbelievers dislike it, this fire will burn bright, Allah Akbar," he said in the comment.

The police have also said they are looking into a complaint filed regarding journalists receiving death threats.

The police have previously provided security to Vaguthu journalists based on information obtained from police intelligence.
