The Maafaru International Airport has opened bids for the terminal expansion project.

The Maafaru airport's operator, state-run Island Aviation Services Ltd., announced that the bid registration for the terminal extension project will take place on May 12. MVR 15,000 must be paid by applicants to acquire tender documents.

Currently, the Maafaru International Airport in Noonu atoll has the capacity to accommodate 100 people at once. According to Mumthaz Ali, the airport's general manager, the terminal extension will allow services to be provided to 300 passengers at once. The new terminal will be more spacious and will include CIP and CIQ lounges.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was granted the contract to expand the runway of the airport last December; the Abu Dhabi Fund provided MVR 418 million of the MVR 443 million needed for the project. The remaining MVR 25 million was provided by the state.

The Maafaru International Airport officially opened in December 2019. A total of USD 60 million (MVR 925 million) from the Abu Dhabi Fund was spent on developing the airport.

The airport, which receives many private jets, also built a fuel farm to accommodate the VIP passengers. The airport will begin using it this month.

Numerous luxurious resorts are scattered across Noonu atoll, including Velaa Private Island, Cheval Blanc Randheli Resort and Soneva Jani, to name a few.
