The opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) coalition on Friday marched in the capital Malé, calling for the release of former President Abdulla Yameen.

Today’s rally was a part of the ongoing ‘Hope Conference’ organised by the opposition coalition. The march, titled "Bunvaru Hingaalun," which loosely translates to "endurance march," commenced in the evening near Majeedhee Magu, with massive crowds and the leaders of the coalition at the forefront.

Former President and Yameen’s predecessor, Dr. Mohamed Waheed; Yameen’s axed Vice President and his current lawyer, Dr. Mohamed Jameel; Malé City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu; PPM-PNC coalition leader Abdul Raheem Abdullah; former Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali, and PPM’s Vice President and Guraidhoo MP Gassan Maumoon were seen leading the march.

Cabinet Ministers during Yameen’s presidency and current opposition parliament members were also at the front lines of the march, along with hundreds of Yameen supporters, all of whom were clad in pink PPM t-shirts and white shirts with Yameen's slogan, "Hope Lives."

At the conference that began on Thursday, the members and the leaders of the opposition discussed matters pertaining to the upcoming presidential election, including their candidate and his candidacy, election preparations, and organising rallies leading up to the election.

Over 1,000 supporters of the jailed former president signed up for the ‘Hope Conference’ which is scheduled to conclude on Saturday. On Thursday’s session of the conference, the members reached a consensus that they do not want to nominate any other candidates except Yameen for the presidential election slated for September 9.

Tomorrow, a rally titled "Dhuppaan," which means "nuisance," is scheduled to be held in Malé to conclude the conference.

Former President Yameen was sentenced for accepting bribes and money laundering on 25 December, 2022, for his involvement in the lease of Vaavu atoll, Aarah.
