Ministry of Social and Family Development announced today that 167 minors remain in state custody due to their parents not assuming custody.

In response to a Right to Information request by Mihaaru News, the ministry reported that the 167 children under state care include 76 girls and 91 boys. Among them are four infants; 3 girls and 1 boy under the age of one.

Previously, children in state custody were cared for at shelters such as Hiyaa and Fiyavathi. While these facilities still house some children, since 2022, “Amaanveshi” or safe environments have been established on various islands, allowing some children to be relocated closer to community settings.

Children in Amaanveshi:

1. Shaviyani atoll Funadhoo: 13 girls

2. Noonu atoll Manadhoo: 16 girls

3. Baa atoll Eydhafushi: 18 boys

4. Dhaalu atoll Kudahuvadhoo: 11 boys

5. Laamu atoll Fonadhoo: 9 boys

7. Fuvahmulah City: 2 girls and 8 boys

The ministry said 49 children were taken into state custody from August last year to September this year including 29 girls and 20 boys.

During that period, 40 children's custodies have been given back to their families and six have been rehabilitated and one has been given a job arranged by the ministry.

According to statistics for the last five years, from 2018 to 2023, 299 children were in state custody. There were 128 girls and 101 boys. During that period, 142 children were returned to their families.

By the age of 18, 19 children have been reintegrated into society and three children have been given employment.

According to the ministry's monthly statistics, children are taken into state custody every month. Some children taken in family cases are temporarily taken away and handed over to their families once cases are resolved.
