Criminal Court has placed an individual who attacked his girlfriend with a knife in remand in custody for 30 days.

The court order states that Rikaz Adam, 22 years, of Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo has been remanded in custody as he presents a danger to the woman in question. It noted that Adam has a criminal record of 26 prior offences.

The court order stated that the conversations proved that there was a romantic relationship between Adam and the woman who was attacked.

In his defence, Adam said in court that he did not assault the woman. He claimed that the incident was an angry argument between the two.

The knife that was found in his bag, he said, is one he uses in diving.

The court placed him in custody stating that there is a chance he may further assault the woman if allowed to remain free. The order further states that it is believed two separate charges will be pressed against Adam, both of which are regarding major criminal offences.
