Former Managing Director of Maldives Gas, Abdulla Maumoon, is facing seven charges of bribery, and the Prosecutor General's (PG) Office has initiated efforts to extradite him back to the Maldives under detention.

The Prosecutor General's Office has filed seven charges of bribery with the Criminal Court against Maumoon. During his tenure as Managing Director of Maldives Gas under former President Abdulla Yameen's administration, a supplier of Maldives Gas deposited USD 298,000 (over MVR 4 million) into Maumoon's and his associates' accounts on multiple occasions allegedly as bribes.

According to the Prosecutor General's Office, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has said that Maumoon is currently residing abroad. If Maumoon refuses to attend the trials, the PG Office has sought an order to detain him to appear before the court.

If the court issues an order to summon Maumoon under detention, Interpol's assistance will be sought to extradite him back to Maldives.
