Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) today donated MVR 2.1 million (USD 136,200) to the ongoing telethon by Public Service Media (PSM) for Palestinian humanitarian efforts.

The ceremonial cheque was presented to the management of PSM by Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, during the telethon which was initiated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, which started at 08:00 am this morning and will continue until midnight.

The donation by MNDF has so far been the biggest single donation made during the event.

Along with Minister Ghassan, the cheque presenting ceremony was also attended by Chief of Defence Force Ibrahim Hilmy as well as several other senior officials from the force.

Along with government agencies, companies and individuals have also made donations at the telethon today. The biggest donation amongst state-owned-enterprises was made by State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), which amounted to MVR 500,000.

A single family also donated MVR 50,000 for the cause.

In the past 11 hours, the telethon has amassed nearly MVR 8 million (USD 518,800) for the Palestinian people.

As part of the telethon activities, 13 donation boxes were placed in various location of Malé, until sunset. However, the donation box placed in the PSM compound will be open until 10:00 pm tonight.

Those unable to physically make it to the donation boxes can directly transfer their donations to 7730000655865 (MVR bank account) and 7730000655866 (USD bank account).

PSM's Managing Director Zeena Zahir assured that this telethon would be audited and that they would ensure the money goes to the Palestinian cause via the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

"We will hand over the funds to the Foreign Ministry, [and] the Foreign Ministry will do the handover to UNRWA," she explained.
