Maldives records highest tourist arrivals since border reopening

Minister of Tourism Dr Abdulla Mausoom revealed that Maldives' saw its highest recorded tourist arrivals on Sunday, since the border reopened on July 15.

According to the minister, a total of 1,582 tourists arrived in the country, successfully meeting the country's arrival forecast for October with over 21,000 visitors.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 37,468 tourists arrived in Maldives between July 15 and October 28.

During the period, the highest number of tourists arrived from Russia and the United Arab Emirates,

Maldives reopened its borders to international passengers on July 15, after nearly four months since the state halted issuing on-arrival visas on March 27. Guesthouses were permitted to resume operations and kick start local tourism on October 15.

Minister Mausoom had earlier expressed hopes for the industry's recovery, estimating that 100,000 tourists would visit Maldives before the end of 2020.

In order to reach the estimated total of 500,000 arrivals for the year, Maldives roughly requires 78,000 additional arrivals.
