The individual facing charges in connection with the alleged cat stabbing on a Malé City street has told the Criminal Court that the widely circulated video is not authentic.
The video circulating no social media shows the man stabbing the cat, which later succumbed to its death. He was arrested and produced before the Criminal Court for an extension of his remand. The court ordered him to be remanded in custody for 15 days.
Although he refrained from discussing the matter during the closed-door session, court records indicate that he suggested the video could have been manipulated by anyone with editing skills.
The accused is facing charges of animal cruelty and possesses a prior criminal record.
The video shows a man walking down the street and suddenly attacking a cat lying near a building. The wounded cat swiftly fled the scene. The incident occurred on Ameer Ahmed Road, behind Nasandhura.
The cat, reportedly pregnant, fell victim to the act of cruelty. Animal cruelty is legally deemed a crime, and if convicted, the accused could face imprisonment of one month and six days.
