The Criminal Court on Monday added nine days to the remands of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his deputy Ali Azim.

Solih and Azim, who are the lawmakers of the constituencies Hinnavaru and Central Henveiru respectively, were arrested from the major opposition rally held last Friday night in capital Male. They were both detained under the state of emergency the government declared on February 5.

After the remand hearing, Solih’s lawyer Nazim Abdul Sattar claimed that his client’s remand was extended over the police allegedly deeming him a danger to society, and to prevent him from hiding or tampering with evidence.

However, Nazim highlighted that Solih was only accused of obstructing the duties of law enforcement officers which, he stated, was disproportionate to Solih’s arrest under the SOE. Nazim added that he would appeal Solih’s remand.

MDP has also claimed that Solih was being treated cruelly at Dhoonidhoo custodial centre, alleging that the prison officers had not given Solih the clothes and heart medication that his family had brought.

Apart from Solih and Azim, the police have detained a number of other opposition lawmakers under the emergency, including Dhangethi MP Ilham Ahmed, Machangolhi South MP Abdulla Sinan, Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon, Galolhu South MP Ahmed Mahloof and Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz.
