Senior members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have described the party's candidate Adam Azim's win in today's Male' mayoral election as a message to the incumbent government.

As per the temporary results of today's election, Azim has gained victory with a large margin, receiving 43 percent of the total number of votes cast.

in a post congratulating Azim on social media X, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail described the win as having come at an opportune moment.

"This is an important win for the Male' residents and all Maldivians which has come at an opportune moment. An important message," his post, in Dhivehi, reads.

Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid framed the win as the public saying no to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and his administration.

Meanwhile, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih posted that MDP would remain steadfast in working in accordance with the aspirations of Male' residents.

The closest competition to Azim in this election was ruling People's National Congress candidate Azima Shakoor. However, Azima received 28 percent of votes.

Elections Commission has said that voter turnout was at approximately 30 percent, while there was a total of 56,002 eligible voters. Attendance at voting centers remained minimal through out the day, without long queues at a single center.
