Maldives and Malaysia signed an agreement on Friday mutually recognizing the use of drivers license in both countries.

This means that Maldivians and Malays can continue to use their drivers license issued to them in their respective countries without having to obtain another local license.

At a ceremony held in Malaysia, the agreement was signed by Maldivian Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula and Malaysian Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong.

Discussions have been underway to use Maldivian licenses in Malaysia, where many Maldivians travel for studies and holidays.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nahula said the change will make life easier for Maldivians in Malaysia, who will now be able to use licenses without further documents.

According to Transport Ministry, the agreement symbolizes the strong relations between Maldives and Malaysia.

Although the agreement was signed between the two countries yesterday, it will come into effect from September 12.
