The Maldives on Thursday awarded development of the largest school in the archipelago based on a brand new concept to Amin Construction Pvt Ltd for MVR 132 million.

Housing Development Corporation (HDC)’s Managing Director Mohamed Saiman and Amin Construction’s Managing Director Abdulla Mohamed signed the agreement to develop “Hulhumale N1 Primary and Secondary School” in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale.

Speaking to reporters after the signing ceremony, HDC’s MD Saiman stressed the importance of advancing the education sector in time with Hulhumale’s increasing population. He also noted that the new project is being launched at a time when there is greater demand for schools.

The new school will boast seven storeys with 50 classrooms, library, laboratories and a multipurpose hall. According to MD Saiman, the building will have three blocks and can accommodate total 1,700 students. Classes from preschool to the tenth grade will be taught in the new school.

Features that set apart the new school with others include allocating open spaces on each floor to hold special activities, and wheelchair ramps.

The project is to be completed within 14 months, which will be in mid-2018. As opening the school in the middle of the academic year will pose various challenges, the date to officially open the school is to be decided after discussion with the Ministry of Education.

There are three schools in Hulhumale currently, including the largest school in the Maldives to date, “Rehendhi School”.
