The government has initiated efforts to collect data aimed at addressing the issue of flats originally allocated to provide housing for those in need being rented out at high prices.

During today's parliamentary session, Mohamed Abbas, MDA MP for Velidhoo constituency, requested the Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development to explain how they plan to tackle the problem of flats under the Social Housing Scheme being rented out.

In response, Minister Ali Haider expressed the government's concern over the commercial use of these properties, which were intended to provide shelter to people in need.

"We are gathering information on these rentals and exploring viable solutions," the minister stated.

This comes amidst growing concerns over flats in Hulhumale' being rented out at rates up to three times their original price, sparking calls for the properties to be reclaimed from tenants.

The Housing Ministry also revealed that many tenants of government-leased flats are failing to pay rent, prompting threats of action against them for non-compliance.
