The asphalt laying work on Ameenee Magu has been successfully completed.
After the current government took over, the asphalt laying of Ameenee Magu began on December 9. However, work had been delayed for several days due to heavy rain in the region.
However, this is the first time that a segment of Ameenee Magu, where road redevelopment work, initiated by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, has been completed at such a fast pace.
An official from the Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC) told Mihaaru News that the asphalt laying of the unfinished section was completed last night. The work was accomplished in 28 days, he said.
The asphalt will take another 3-4 days to dry, after which the road will be opened, and road signs will be drawn, he said.
"The area will be opened to traffic in five days," the official said.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu visited the area yesterday afternoon and in the early hours of Sunday morning to inspect the completed road after dawn prayers today.
The Ameenee Magu construction was handed over to MRDC on July 3, 2022, at a cost of MVR 84 million from the state budget during the previous administration. The then government had planned to complete the project by September last year.
However, physical work on the project began in October 2022. The first part of Ameenee Magu was opened in March last year after the RDC completed the construction of the road and handed over the asphalt laying to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). While the first part was completed in March, MRDC took charge of the remaining segments. The road was completed up to the junction between Ameenee Magu and Izzudheen Magu by the end of the previous government's term.
While Ameenee Magu's construction is now complete, the present government has decided to begin asphalt laying on Kanbaa Aisa Rani Hingun and other major roads in Malé.
The previous government faced criticism for the slow pace of the asphalt laying on Ameenee Magu.
