India granted MVR 7.7 million to the government of Maldives, to purchase and deliver 11 land ambulances to hospitals and health centres across the country, announced Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

In a press release, the ministry asserted that the administration is committed to improving health services across Maldives, including the accessibility of services.

The ministry also noted that providing an ambulance and effective ambulatory services to each island was a pledge of the current government.

India provided the grant assistance through the USD 6.9 million (MVR 100 million) granted to Maldives during the visit of Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj in March 2019. The aim of the grant assistance is to conduct high-impact socio-economic development projects across the country.

The Maldivian government recently announced a number of projects to be undertaken through the Indian grant assistance, including the development of an International Convention Centre in the north, funding of projects at the Police Academy's Specialised Training School, and to establish emergency medical services and construct classrooms in some islands.
