Last night's hostage situation where a man held at woman at knifepoint had been the result of escalation in a lovers' spat over rent issues, Mihaaru News reports.

The perpetrator has been identified as Adam Athuhar, Happyland, Shaviyani Atoll Milandhoo. He was granted pardon for a prison sentence on September 2, 2022 by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He was released after setting some conditions for release.

Videos of the incident have been circulating on social media. As seen in some footage, Athuhar holds the woman by knifepoint while he sits behind her on a motorcycle, and exchanges words with the Police. Once Police cleared the way, he got the woman to ride the motorcycle away. Reports indicate that he was attempting to reach a house in Rahdhebai Magu, in the centre of capital Male' City.

However, many onlookers gathered on to the streets, causing the couple to halt the motorcycle at a junction. At this time, two police motorcycles had been riding in their wake. A police officer approached the couple from behind, and hit Akhtar over the head with a baton, attempting to rescue the woman.

As he was hit by the baton, Athuhar retaliated by trying to slash the woman's throat, however reports indicate the woman was later treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital and was not seriously injured in the assault.

The motorcycle fell, at which point bystanders and police pulled away the woman to a safe distance, and Athuhar was rushed to ADK hospital to gauge the extent of his injuries and to get appropriate treatment. He has since been discharged from hospital, with Police saying no serious injuries had been sustained.

Mihaaru News reports that the altercation was a result of an argument between Athuhar and his partner over difficulties in paying the rent for their shared apartment. Besides the couple, one other individual resides in the apartment.

As Athuhar has not been working, it is the woman who has been covering the rent through her salary over the past months. Last night, she reportedly informed Athuhar that she refused to continue in this way, leading to the couple fighting over it, with matters quickly escalating beyond a heated exchange of words.

A person close to the incident told Mihaaru News that the argument had intensified, with Athuhar assaulting the woman, and the fight moving from the apartment to outside the building.

Residents of other flats in the same building had reported the incident to Police as the fight continued to escalate. When Police arrived at the scene, Athuhar and the woman were just inside the door of the building, even then with a knife held at her throat.

Threatening to kill the woman, he coerced her in to riding away with him on a motorcycle, at which point police intercepted.
