Ministry of Tourism has initiated a program titled "Fahi Fathuruverikamah Anhenun" (translated as Women for Progressive Tourism) to promote the involvement of more women in the field of tourism.
Increasing women's participation in the tourism field is among the '14 weeks' objectives of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
Through this programme, efforts will be made to identify areas of interest to students, after which related information and opportunities will be offered to them.
The programme will be conducted twice a year in two stages:
1. Familiarization with the tourism industry
2. Providing opportunities to start out in the tourism industry
Those who complete the programme will then be presented with a certificate, after which the first step of the programme will be commenced again.
The Tourism Ministry said that conducting this programme would present solutions to the challenges women face in opting to work in the tourism industry.
Applicants to the programme must be females who have completed certificate or diploma level studies. Interested applicants can send in their letters of interest to [email protected].
Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal said in his speech today that with it's fifty years of service, the tourism industry offers the widest array of employment opportunities.
He revealed that a long term plan has been compiled to increase women's participation in the field, adding that statistics as of two years ago show minimal involvement of women in the industry.
The 2022 Census indicates that the tourism industry employs 52,483 individuals. Of these, 15,597 are Maldivians, with only 891 women contributing to this number.
