Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has announced today that he will be contesting in the party's 2028 presidential primaries.
Fayyaz is one of the most influential leaders in MDP at present, and he made the announcement today in a Whatsapp group of MDP National Council members.
MDP primaries are expected to be highly competitive for the 2028 presidential ticket, with Fayyaz being the first to announce his intention to contest.
Many believe that former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will also contest for MDP's presidential ticket, but Solih remains silent on the matter.
He was recently asked the question in a talk show on Raajje TV, with his response being that he has discussed and shared his future plans in the political arena with leaders of MDP.
He said that about five individuals have already expressed interest in running for the ticket. Solih believes this is a positive outcome, emphasizing the importance of holding elections with healthy competition.
Former President Abdulla Yameen, now of People's National Front, has also announced he will run for presidency in 2028.
