TTM elections to appoint their new EXCO term had taken place yesterday with the President, Vice President and Treasurer all elected for another term at their positions.
Ali Rasheed has been elected for his third term as the President of the Table Tennis Association of Maldives (TTAM).
While a candidate had vied for each position of the association's executive committee, the polling to elect the committee had proceeded yesterday evening from 1500 hrs to 1800 hrs at the Male’ Table Tennis Hall.
Ali, who had also served as the Vice President of TTAM had first contested in the 2016 TTAM elections. Under his guidance, the sport had achieved incredible feats, securing a special position in Maldives' sports industry amid the past eight years.
Table Tennis had produced countless medals for the country and was also crowned the Best Association of the Year at the Maldives Sports Awards.
Ali had earlier said that his decision to contend for another term is for the purpose of gearing up for further advancements and preserving the success of the sport. Ali, who is also serving as the Chef-de-Mission at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics had also affirmed that efforts to establish additional TT training centers in local islands will also be made during this term.
Ibrahim Shiuree, Vice President of Table Tennis Association of Maldives, had also competed for another term in his position. He had expended commendable efforts during his term. However, it is likely his role within TTAM affairs will be less with the position of Managing Director at Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) conferred to him by the State.
Ahmed Shazil, who had served as treasurer of the association was also elected for another term in the position.
Former TT athlete, Aishath Fadhuwa Ali had also secured a spot in the association's executive committee, serving as the representative for female members of TTM. Fadhuwa is also the wife of table tennis athlete, Moosa Munsif, who remains one of the most successful players the country has produced.
Meanwhile, the experienced technical official, Azzam Ibrahim was elected into the EXCO to represent male members of the association.
The candidate elected to serve the committee as the representative for table tennis clubs was Jadhulla Hassan while Ismail Shujau was conferred the position of Representative for Associate Members of TTAM.
The preceding TT elections held in 2020 had observed a lawsuit lodged at the Civil Court by table tennis athlete, Ali Adam Manik. He had appealed for a temporary order suspending the election until a court ruling is passed, however, the court had ruled that there was no sufficient cause for postponing polling.
Once an election lawsuit was filed at the court, the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) had also issued a notice of caution to the country at the time. The Federation warned that if the election is not held on the determined date, Maldives will be suspended from all table tennis activities.
The closest contender who had vied for the position of president during the 2020 elections alongside Ali was Thoha Saleem.
