The island council's Rahvehige - a community house - has suffered extensive damages due to erosion on the north side of Alifu Alifu Atoll Feridhoo.

Ismail Shah, president of the island council, told that it has been years since "Rahvehige" has been used. It was built by a group of Japanese people who came to the island for an agricultural project in 1984.

"Rahvehige" was used to accommodate dignitaries visiting the island during the time of Island Chiefs.

Shah said that the new council had also sought ways to generate income using "Rahvehige". However, the building was destroyed due to erosion from the north of the island in January.

At that time, the roof of the building, along with the walls suffered extensive damages.

"During a meeting with the President it was proposed to protect the area as a top priority. The areas was slowly eroding that time as well. The President said that the issue would be resolved as part of this year's harbor development project. There is support from the government," Shah said.

"Rahvehige" is a three bedroom building with attached sitting room and kitchen. The size of the building is 13,000 square feet.

Shah said that there is a club-run building in the area. The walls of the building has been affected by sea water.

The issue of erosion in Feridhoo, which has a beautiful beach, has escalated. The council said that a lot of work has been done to resolve the issue.
